I cross the threshold of the Blue Note at 7:50 p.m., and I enter in the dining-room concert-hall to have dinner before the concert. The hall is already crowded with people who are quietly talking at their tables lit up by hundreds of candles. I am here for the concert of two exceptional artists, both under a technical and under a expressive point of view; artists endowed with a great soul. I am talking about Patricia Cathcart and William Charles Andress, known world-wide as Tuck and Patti. Their latest album, "Chocolate Moment" was released in 2002 (T&P Records). In 2002 thay also recorded another album which included a compilation of jazz standards, "As Time Goes By" (Windham Hill Records), and before that, in 2001 they recorded "Taking The Long Way Home" (Windham Hill) introducing their original songs. "Chocolate Moment" is their ninth album as a duo voice/guitar.

Patti writes her songs, which are all pervaded by a profound and serene spirituality, some of which have been written with Tuck.

Tuck and Patti appear on stage with the third star of this memorable evening: Tuck's Gibson guitar. The first song they perform is "Take This Feeling", that Patti offers us with her wonderful, velvety voice. The audience is already delirious…. And they start the second song, "My Romance", in which Patti gives us all her heart and her soul. A slow ballad that underlines the extraordinary interpretation and vokal skills of this generous artist.

Together they make up a formidable duo both under the artistic and musical point of view. Tuck's hands, that move swiftly up and down the guitar's neck playing, creating a rhythmic pulse, improvising, his fingers jumping back and forth delivering harmonics long the whole guitar's neck are an awsome sight for our eyes and for our ears.

Among the various songs performed during the concert, I'll name "Learning How To Fly", "Heaven Down Here" and "Wildflower", that Patti dedicates to all the "wildflowers" in the audience: women.

Patti conveys warmth and generosity. She is truthfully giving us her very heart without reservation, and the audience can tell this, and responds with enthusiasm. After this song, Patti leaves the stage, leaving Tuck alone. Tuck talks and jokes a little with the audience, and then he introduces the song he is going to play: "Over The Rainbow". He offers us a masterly interpretation of this very famous piece. The ovations he receives at the end of his playing are truly deserved, he is a skillful guitar virtuoso.

Patti comes back on stage, and sings "Love Is The Key"… And on the notes and lyrics of this beautiful song, that she endows at the end with a percussive scat that leaves me speechless and ecstatic, I realize that tears are running down my cheeks. She allows us to hear Mother Earth's pulse… We are all immersed in a strong and powerful constant heartbeat, alternated by sighs and sounds, and meaningful words. Patti is conveying something Great and Arcane: she is transmitting the mystery of life on the Blue Note's stage.

The last song that Tuck and Patti perform is "Time After Time". While Patti is still singing, she asks the audience to join in. She divides us into three different sections and harmonizes our voices into a choir. The Blue Note audience siezes the chance to sing with these great artists…. And sings!

At the end of this first set, Tuck and Patti go back to their dressing room, followed by applause, cheers and ovations which go on without stopping for about ten minutes or even more. The audience keeps on calling them back by clapping even harder and beating their feet on the ground. They appear once again on stage, and Patti excuses herself with a great smile, saying that they didn't realize the audience had gone on clapping for so long because the steel doors had cut off the sound. She says they would have never let their audience wait and call for so long without coming back! And they both very generously play and sing other two songs, even though the second set is about to start.

Great artists, this concert can't be missed! And, for those who can understand the lyrics, a balm for our souls.

Interview with Ivan Lins: "When I start to write songs, well, I've never written songs for me, because I started to sing a little late in my career. Well, I started everything late. I started piano when I was 18, and then I started to write songs when I was at the University, and I never thought I was going to sing one day in my life. So when I was starting to write songs, I was imagining somebody singing them. And this kicks into my heart today." (Eva Simontacchi)
