On June 4th Ivan Lins (voice and keyboards) performed two exciting and beautiful sets with Leonardo Amuedo (guitar).

Ivan Lins
surely deserves to be much more well-known than he already is, because he is one of the greatest innovators of the modern Brazilian music. He is a composer gifted by a very original musical mood, he is never trite, and has a very strong personality. And most of all, he is an elegant and expressive performer, which is a quality that very few possess.

In order to understand the personality of this very prolific and gifted artist, just think that when at the end of the ‘60s he realized he was being commercially manipulated, he broke off with the TV's show-biz. His simplicity, naturalness and generosity are evident during his performances. You can feel he's with his audience all the time; he gives all he's got, and he does it having fun and involving Amuedo, the guitar-player with meaningful glances in order to establish performances and dynamics. The people who saw both the sets surely realized that the two musicians had great fun playing together, and that they never repeated something they had already done, even though they were playing the same song. A wonderful interplay.

Blue Note's audience replied very warmly to his performance, especially during the second set, clapping their hands as soon as he played the first couple of notes of some of his most famous songs, that have practically become "standards" of Brazilian music (Madalena, Comecar De Novo, Lembra De Mim, Abre Alas, Dinorah Dinorah, Bilhete).

A spectacular solo by Amuedo in the song "Vitoriosa" excites the audience, and Ivan Lins performs a tribute to Jobim by singing "Garota de Ipanema" rubato, in a poetically dilated version.

In the second set, Ivan Lins performs the most recent songs (Somos Todos Iguais Nesta Noite, Ai Ai Ai Ai Ai, Pasarela No Ar) but also "Arlequim", one of his first compositions.

After the first set, when the audience asks for more, he sings "Desesperar Jamais", and in the second set he chooses "Vitoriosa", flinging himself with great energy and amusement in a long and surprising solo, where he included various quotes including "Birdland" by Zawinul.

At a certain point, while he was performing the last song of the concert, we all heard the sound of a mouth-organ that was playing the theme with him from under the stage. Lins looked around half astonished, half amused, and called the boy that was playing the instrument (we then discovered his name was Lorenzo)to sit in.

A surpising end of the concert!

I started piano when I was 18, and then I started to write songs when I was at the University, and I never thought I was going to sing one day in my life. So when I was starting to write songs, I was imagining somebody singing them. And this kicks into my heart today." (Eva Simontacchi)
