Acclaimed Trumpeter/Composer Dave Douglas will lead four distinctive
bands at Jazz Standard, December 8 – 11
Best Jazz Club 2008 (New York Magazine)
JAZZ STANDARD, one of the nation's premier jazz
clubs, presents another month of great jazz in December. From December 8–11, the
critically lauded trumpeter, composer, and bandleader Dave Douglas will appear
at the helm of four different and equally exciting aggregations: an electric unit
featuring saxophonist Donny McCaslin (12/8); with the "So Percussion" ensemble (12/9);
with saxophonist Ravi Coltrane and pianist Vijay Iyer in "Orange Afternoons" (12/10);
and with his mighty Brass Ecstasy (12/11). The "Tango Meets Jazz" festival returns
to our stage for its 11th consecutive year (12/1 – 12/4) with the Pablo Ziegler
Quartet and special guests Joe Locke (12/1 – 12/2) and Regina Carter
(12/3 – 12/4). Pianist Danilo Perez and his superb trio will hold forth
from December 15–18. And from December 27 until New Year's Day, JAZZ STANDARD will
swing in the New Year with Grammy Award-winner Richard Bona and his brand
new project called Mandekan Cubano plus very special guest Lionel Loueke
(12/31 only). Our acclaimed "Mingus Mondays" residency continues this month
with performances by the Grammy Award–winning Mingus Big Band (12/12, 12/26)
and the Mingus Orchestra (12/5, 12/19). Below is a complete schedule of

Plus Special Guests Joe Locke (12/1–12/2) & Regina Carter (12/3–12/4)
Pablo Zeigler – piano
Hector Del Curto – bandeon
Claudio Ragazzi – guitar
Pedro Giraudo – bass
With Special Guests:
Joe Locke – vibraphone (12/1-12/2)
Regina Carter – violin (12/3-12/4)
For the 11th consecutive year, JAZZ STANDARD proudly presents our annual "Tango
Meets Jazz" Festival, featuring and directed by Latin Grammy award-winning pianist
and composer Pablo Ziegler, "the outstanding representative of the nuevo tango
in his generation" (Stereo Review). After collaborating with tango grand-maestro
Astor Piazzolla as the pianist in Piazzolla's quintet for over a decade, Ziegler
has led his own groups for over 20 years, refining and re-imagining the bounds of
the New Tango tradition. Two very special guests will join the Ziegler quartet for
this week's festivities: vibraphonist Joe Locke on December 1–2 and the nonpareil
violinist Regina Carter, acclaimed recording artist and MacArthur Foundation "genius"
grant winner, December 3–4.
Produced by Pat Philips and Ettore Stratta.
Music Charge: $30
12/5 Mingus Orchestra
Our acclaimed "Mingus Monday" residency continues this month with the absorbing
jazz–meets– classical sounds of the Mingus Orchestra. "Mingus generates and keeps
generating such personal force that if you have been listening to jazz at
all, it is almost impossible not to recognize his bass, his compositions, his small
combos and his orchestras instantly," wrote critic and author Nat Hentoff
in the 1970s. "Like Duke. Like Monk. And like them, unlike anybody."
Music Charge: $25
12/6 – 12/7 Rez Abbasi: Invocation
Rez Abbasi – guitar
Rudresh Mahanthappa - alto saxophone
Vijay Iyer – piano
Johannes Weidenmueller – bass
Dan Weiss – drums
Born in Karachi, Pakistan, raised in Southern California, and a New Yorker for the
past 18 years, Rez Abbasi has been hailed as one of the most talented and adventurous
guitarists in jazz today. As a sideman, he has performed with American artists ranging
from Ruth Brown to Marilyn Crispell, and with such major Indian musicians as Pandit
Kadri Gopalnath and Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. This much-anticipated JAZZ STANDARD
appearance celebrates the 11/8 release of Invocation (Enja Records),
the artist's 8th career album as a leader; and the show features the disc's
all–star cast including alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa, pianist Vijay Iyer,
and drummer Dan Weiss. "Coltrane, Ellington and Gillespie all immersed themselves
into music from around the world and then brought it back home," says Rez Abbasi.
"If I can have that kind of unifying affect, I've succeeded!"
Music Charge: $20
12/8 – 12/11 Dave Douglas GPS 2011
Arguably the most prolific and original trumpeter/composer of his generation, Dave
Douglas has written 400 compositions across more than 35 recordings. His unique
contributions to improvised music have garnered distinguished recognition including
a Guggenheim Fellowship, Aaron Copland award, and multiple Grammy Award nominations.
This week, Dave returns to our stage with four new, distinctly unique groups playing
new music from 2011 releases in the Greenleaf Portable Series (GPS), a new digitally-driven
series from his innovative artist-run label.
12/8 Key Motion Quintet
Dave Douglas – trumpet
Donny McCaslin – tenor saxophone
Adam Benjamin – Fender Rhodes
Tim Lefebvre – bass
Mark Guiliana – drums
Dave has worked with electric instruments for years in ensembles such as his Grammy–nominated
band Keystone. Label mate Donny McCaslin's latest album, Perpetual Motion
nods to similar electric instrumental explorations described by the New York
Times as "a firecracker of an album". This new group (aptly titled "Key Motion")
pairs these two creative forces at the peak of their powers.
Music Charge: $25
12/9 Dave Douglas & So Percussion
Dave Douglas – trumpet
So Percussion:
Eric Beach, Josh Quillen, Adam Sliwinski, Jason Treuting – marimba, musical saw,
shruti box, crotales, and many more non-traditional percussion instruments.
Since 1999, So Percussion has been creating music that explores all the extremes
of emotion and musical possibility. Called an "experimental powerhouse" by The
Village Voice, "astonishing and entrancing" by Billboard Magazine, and
"brilliant" by The New York Times, the Brooklyn–based quartet's innovative
work with today's most exciting composers and their own original music has quickly
helped them forge a unique and diverse career. The quartet will join forces with
Dave Douglas tonight to celebrate the release of Bad Mango, with new compositions
and revisits from Douglas's catalogue that are sure to be (in Duke Ellington's words)
"beyond category."
Music Charge: $30
12/10 Orange Afternoons Quintet
Dave Douglas – trumpet
Ravi Coltrane – tenor saxophone
Vijay Iyer – piano
Linda Oh – bass
E.J. Strickland – drums
This modern–day jazz "super–group" is certain to draw crowds for tonight's very
special digital release engagement for Orange Afternoons. Ravi Coltrane and
Vijay Iyer likely need no introduction. Both these celebrated instrumentalists have
appeared on our stage with their own bands on multiple occasions. Bassist Linda
Oh is a relative newcomer to the New York scene. The acclaimed pianist of the group
Vijay Iyer says of Oh "a young bass powerhouse from down-under...I love how she
just blew into town and took over."
Music Charge: $30
12/11 Dave Douglas & Brass Ecstasy
Dave Douglas – trumpet
Vincent Chancey – French horn
Luis Bonilla – trombone
Marcus Rojas – tuba
Rudy Royston – drums
Born out of the Festival of New Trumpet Music in 2005, Brass Ecstasy nods to the
ever–evolving spirit of brass music through soul–inflected compositions. The group's
debut recording, Spirit Moves, was released 6/16/2009 on Greenleaf Music.
Rare Metals is the digital follow-up to the live recording United Front:
Brass Ecstasy at Newport, and includes a new arrangement of Billy Strayhorn's
"Lush Life." "The five–piece ensemble handles each tune with soulful aplomb." (Nate
Chinen, The New York Times)
Music Charge: $25
12/12 Mingus Big Band
Swing into the spirit of the holidays with two exciting sets from the Mingus Big
Band – winners of the 2010 Grammy Award in the category of Best Large Jazz Ensemble
Album for their latest CD, Live At Jazz Standard. The Washington
Post says: "The best jazz orchestra in the world bears the name of the Mingus
Big Band. A remarkable high standard of musicianship, energy and consistency!"
Music Charge: $25
12/13 – 12/14 Azar Lawrence Quintet
Azar Lawrence – tenor & soprano saxophone
Nicholas Payton – trumpet
Benito Gonzalez – piano
Essiet Okon Essiet – bass
Jeff "Tain" Watts – drums
In April 2011, Azar Lawrence made his debut appearance on our stage…and left no
doubt that he is the greatest contemporary exponent of the legacy of John Coltrane.
Born 1952 in Los Angeles, by age 21 Azar had worked with Ike & Tina Turner, War,
and Charles Wright's Watts 103rd Street Band ("Express Yourself"). He
joined drummer Elvin Jones for two years and for the next eight years moved between
Jones' group and that of McCoy Tyner. Azar then briefly joined the Miles Davis band,
appearing on the live album Dark Magus (recorded 3/30/1974); he also recorded
with Roberta Flack and Marvin Gaye, appearing on the Marvin's classic Here My
Dear. He released three albums as a leader, and had his songs recorded by Stanley
Turrentine and Earth Wind & Fire, among others. In 2010, Azar Lawrence released
Mystic Journey (Furthermore Recordings), his first album in nearly 30 years!
During this return engagement, he'll be recording live for future CD release with
this very special all-star band – come and be part of the excitement!
Music Charge: $25
12/15 – 12/18 Danilo PÉrez Trio
Danilo Pérez – piano
Ben Street – bass
Adam Cruz – drums
"When the dust settles, the pianist Danilo Pérez will be looking like one of the
best things that happened to jazz around the turn of the millennium," The New
York Times declared in 2006. Providencia, his Mack Avenue label debut,
reached the Top Ten in Down Beat's 59th annual Critics Poll: The
album criss–crossed streams of jazz, classical and Latin American folk music in
a creative process Pérez describes as "hearing music in three dimensions." A longtime
favorite of JAZZ STANDARD audiences, Pérez returns this week alongside his long-time
supple rhythm section of bassist Ben Street and drummer Adam Cruz. "With the firmness
of his keyboard attack and the limitlessness of his rhythmic and harmonic fancy,
Pérez has the stuff of a still–forming giant," wrote David Adler at JazzTimes.com.
"This trio allows him to thrive."
Music Charge: $25/$30 Friday & Saturday
12/19 Mingus Orchestra
"‘My music is evidence of my soul's will to live,' Charles Mingus once said,
and the evidence of that life force amounts to some of the most dramatic and powerful
jazz composed in the 20th century. A volcanically active genius, the
bass player packed an incendiary mix of soulful music, impassioned politics, cross–genre
vision and creative but occasionally self–destructive impetuosity into a three–decade
career." (John Fordham, The Guardian)
Music Charge: $25
12/20 – 12/23 Aaron Goldberg Trio
Aaron Goldberg – piano
Reuben Rogers – bass
Eric Harland – drums
Pianist/composer Aaron Goldberg returns to our stage, after his majestic collaboration
with the Argentinean composer/pianist Guillermo Klein over the summer, at the helm
of his own powerhouse trio featuring Reuben Rogers (bass) and Eric Harland (drums).
In the words of The Boston Globe, Goldberg "has forged a singular sound with
an expansive textural palette and a tenaciously intuitive approach to shaping material
on the bandstand." The New York Times praised his latest CD, Home,
as "a statement of confident serenity." Saxophonist Joshua Redman says, "Aaron Goldberg
truly has it all. One of the most exciting, inventive, and lyrical pianists you
will ever hear." Don't miss one of the most in-demand pianists on the scene this
week at JAZZ STANDARD, as they come fresh off a European tour.
Music Charge: $30
12/24 – 12/25 Jazz Standard Closed For The Holidays
12/26 Mingus Big Band
"Whatever Charles Mingus did, he did with conviction and courage. In a world of
codes, charades, and compromises, he refused to play by rules for which he had contempt.
Always ready to strike the first blow, he left himself wide open in the process.
It was this openness – to experience, to emotion, to action, to risk – that made
Mingus and his music such intense and involving forces." (Dan Morgenstern, "Charles
Mingus," from Living With Jazz, edited by Sheldon Meyer)
Music Charge: $25
12/27 – 1/1 Richard Bona: Mandekan Cubano plus special guest Lionel Loueke
(12/31 Only)
Michael Rodriguez – trumpet
Ozzy Melendez – trombone
Osmany Paredes – piano
Richard Bona – bass/vocals
Luisito Quintero – percussion
Roberto Quintero – percussion
Special Guest: Lionel Loueke – guitar/vocals (12/31 only)

for six gala nights of music inspired by the shared heritage, rich folkloric and
traditional music of West Africa and Cuba. The acclaimed bassist, vocalist, and
songwriter will lead an all-star band with some very special guests, including the
gifted guitarist Lionel Loueke (12/31 only). Make your reservations now to be part
