JUNE 2011 SCHEDULE
6/1 Sean Jones Group
Sean Jones – trumpet
Brian Hogans – alto saxophone
Orrin Evans – piano
Luques Curtis – bass
John Davis – drums
Over the course of five previous albums for the Mack Avenue label, Sean Jones has
plumbed complex emotional depths through his trumpet playing and composing. So when
he set his mind to creating No Need For Words, "I didn't want to do your
typical love songs record that just deals with one aspect of love," Jones explains.
"I wanted to do an album that really dealt with a few different shades of love."
Thus "Look and See" opens the set with a bright, engaging fanfare that celebrates
a less intimate, more universal brand of love. But the title track, "No Need For
Words," evokes those physical, carnal moments in which the verbal becomes unnecessary,
as the leader's horn virtually reaches out of the speakers to lower the blinds and
light the candles in the room where you listen. No matter what angle they take on
the subject, Jones & Company's blazing interactions reveal what any jazz fan knows
is the greatest love of all: that which exists between an artist and his music.
"I like to play from the heart and not the head," says Sean Jones." Come and get
his soul message at Jazz Standard!
Music Charge: $20
6/2–3 Don Byron Ivey Divey Trio featuring Geri Allen & Charli Persip
Don Byron – tenor saxophone, clarinet
Geri Allen – piano
Charli Persip – drums
The saga of Ivey–Divey began in 2004 with Don Byron's Blue Note album of the same
name, a graceful and inventive tribute to saxophone legend Lester Young and the
1946 recordings he made with a trio including pianist Nat "King" Cole and drummer
Buddy Rich. (Just to keep his listeners on their toes, Byron also included interpretations
of Miles Davis' "Freddie Freeloader" and "In A Silent Way"!) Ivey–Divey was
nominated for a Grammy Award and voted "Record of the Year" by Jazz Times.
For this first portion of his four–night engagement, Don Byron revisits the music
of Ivey–Divey in the company of two outstanding collaborators, pianist Geri
Allen and veteran drummer Charli Persip. "Showing us new ways of thinking and feeling
about familiar experiences is one of the tasks of the true artist and is something
Don Byron revels in." – The Times of London
Music Charge: $25 Thursday / $30 Friday
6/4–5 Don Byron New Gospel Quintet
DK Dyson – vocals
Don Byron – tenor saxophone, clarinet, vocals
Xavier Davis – piano
Brad Jones – bass
Pheeroan akLaff – drums
In the spring of 2009, The Don Byron New Gospel Quintet was launched with a four–night
run at Jazz Standard. "Examining the specific blues styles peculiar to country,
R&B, and rock led me to thorough studies of the blues based religious music of White
and Black Southern Gospel," Byron explained at the time. "I am combining my own
compositions with traditional gospel pieces in a way I have not attempted before.
This project coincides with a growth in my own faith and is for me a religious expression."
Since that auspicious debut, this unique aggregation has completed a major tour
of Europe, rocked the Cheltenham Festival in England, and drawn a packed house to
its performance at the 2011 Winter Jazz Fest in NYC. Don't miss the return of Don
Byron's New Gospel Quintet to Jazz Standard!
Music Charge: $30 Saturday / $25 Sunday
6/6 Mingus Orchestra
Jazz Standard continues its acclaimed "Mingus Monday" series this month with the
Mingus Orchestra. With its enchanting blend of jazz and "non–jazz" instrumentation,
the Orchestra is fully equipped to meet the compositional demands of its namesake,
legendary bassist and composer Charles Mingus.
Music Charge: $25
6/7–8 Adam Cruz & Milestone featuring Chris Potter, Miguel Zenon (6/7),
Steve Wilson (6/8), Steve Cardenas, Scott Colley and Edward Simon
Chris Potter – tenor saxophone
Miguel Zenon – alto saxophone (6/7)
Steve Wilson – alto saxophone (6/8)
Steve Cardenas – guitar
Scott Colley – bass
Edward Simon – piano
Adam Cruz – drums
Best known for his decade–plus position in the Danilo Perez piano trio, Adam Cruz
takes a creative giant step forward with the release of Milestone (Sunnyside
Records), his debut album as leader. "I've invested a lot of time in practicing
and studying, working at my relationship with the piano and developing a compositional
voice," says the 40–year old musician. "There's a certain amount of growth and maturity
that I have gone through, deepening my dedication as a drummer and composer."
Milestone features eight original Cruz compositions and the all–star band he'll
lead this week on our stage. The music strikes a rare balance between smart, detailed
writing and freedom, with plenty of space for the personalities and ideas of the
individual players: "I knew with this personnel that I'd be getting the kind of
depth, sensitivity and versatility…that would enable them to shine, yet also yield
to a group aesthetic at the same time."
Music Charge: $20
6/9 Warren Wolf Quintet
Warren Wolf – vibes
Lyle Link – tenor saxophone
Lawrence Fields – piano
Kris Funn – bass
John Lamkin – drums
Multi–instrumentalist Warren Wolf is the sort of musical prodigy who comes along
only once in a very great while. Warren began playing drums at the age of three,
took up vibraphone a few years later, toured with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra
when he was 9, wrote his first tune when he was 10, and was working professional
jazz gigs by the time he was 12. Since his graduation from Berklee, Warren has played
piano with vocalist Rachael Price and drums with saxophonist Tia Fuller. He's also
worked with Bobby Watson, Christian McBride, and the late David "Fathead" Newman
(among many others), and released two albums as a leader on the Japanese M&I label.
This gig will feature Warren Wolf, the vibraphonist, who says "I want to be a person
who's trying to take music to another level." Hear him do just that, tonight at
Jazz Standard!
Music Charge: $20
6/10–12 Aaron Goldberg Trio (6/10 at 9:30pm & 11:30pm only)
In the words of The Boston Globe, pianist Aaron Goldberg "has forged a singular
sound with an expansive textural palette and a tenaciously intuitive approach to
shaping material on the bandstand." The New York Times praised his latest
CD, Home, as "a statement of confident serenity. Mr. Goldberg's bright fluency
and pristine articulation are the guiding characteristics of the band, whether his
sidemen are drifting peaceably beside him or agitating beneath." Saxophonist Joshua
Redman says, "Aaron Goldberg truly has it all. One of the most exciting, inventive,
and lyrical pianists you will ever hear." We can't wait to hear what will you say
when you catch the Aaron Goldberg Trio at Jazz Standard this weekend!
Music Charge: $30/$25 Sunday
6/13 Mingus Big Band
The Mingus Big Band is riding high on a wave of attention for its Grammy Award–winning
CD Mingus Big Band Live at Jazz Standard - "an almost flawless slice of some
of Mingus's finest work," in the words of PopMatters.com. The indomitable
spirit of Charles Mingus lives on – every Monday night at Jazz Standard!
Music Charge: $25
6/14–19 James Farm featuring Joshua Redman, Aaron Parks, Matt Penman
and Eric Harland (7:30pm & 9:30pm only)
Joshua Redman – tenor & soprano saxophone
Aaron Parks – piano
Matt Penman – bass
Eric Harland – drums
Jazz Standard and Nonesuch Records celebrate the 4/26 release of All For One,
the debut album by James Farm, a collaborative band featuring saxophonist Joshua
Redman, pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Matt Penman, and drummer Eric Harland. James
Farm, which made its live debut at the 2009 Montreal Jazz Festival, takes a song–based
approach to jazz using traditional acoustic quartet instrumentation. Writing in
the Mercury News, Richard Sheinin hailed "a band, which, if it stays together
and plays with any regularity, will be an important one. By cooking the music in
a smart new way, and by doing it with this much excitement and accessibility, James
Farm could be one of those rare breakthrough bands — Brubeck and Miles did it long
ago — that appeals to a significant audience beyond the jazz audience."
Music Charge: $35
6/20 Mingus Dynasty (one set at 9:30 p.m.)
"My music is as varied as my feelings are, or the world is, and one kind of composition
expresses only part of the total world of my music. The greatness of jazz is that
is an art of the moment." – Charles Mingus, from his liner notes for the 1960 Atlantic
LP Blues & Roots.
Music Charge: $25
6/21 Phronesis
Ivo Neame – piano
Jasper Høiby – bass
Anton Eger – drums
"Phronēsis" is the Ancient Greek word for wisdom or intelligence, distinguished
from other words for wisdom as the virtue of practical thought. The three
gifted musicians of Phronesis bring collective decades of study and theory to the
in–the–moment practice of improvisation – and the result, declared Ivan Hewett in
The Telegraph of London, is "the most electrifying experience to be had in
British jazz." Led by Danish bassist Jasper Høiby, Phronesis has captured the hearts
and minds of UK audiences and developed a growing reputation as one of Britain's
most formidable trios. The group's third album, Alive (Edition Records),
was released November 2010 and named "Jazz Album of the Year" by both Jazzwise
and MOJO magazines.
Music Charge: $20
6/22 Pedro Giraudo Orchestra
Pedro Giraudo – bass, compositions & arrangements
Will Vinson – alto & soprano saxophones, flute
Todd Bashore – alto saxophone, flute

Carl Maraghi – baritone saxophone, bass clarinet
Jonathan Powell – trumpet
Miki Hirose – trumpet, flugelhorn

Tony De Vivo – cajón
Special Guest: Sofia Tosello - vocals
The wonderful bassist, bandleader and composer Pedro Giraudo has graced our stage
many times, but this one–night stand promises to be something special: It will feature
the music of his new album, Córdoba, due out 6/14/2011on Zoho Music. This
exceptional recording features a large ensemble playing eight new Giraudo compositions
including "Sol Naciente" ("Sun Rising"), "A La Escuela" ("The Road to School"),
and the ambitious three–part suite "Pueblo" ("Village"). "Whether writing about
a sunrise or an encounter," says Pedro Giraudo, "my music is informed by the essential
sentimental and rhythmic elements of Argentine popular music, including the
chacarera, zamba, and baguala, as well the more urban Argentine
tango. For me, one of the most powerful emotions is nostalgia — in the case of this
album, my nostalgia for the innocence, the excitement of discovery, and the beauty
of those summers spent with my family in the beautiful Córdoba countryside."
Music Charge: $20
6/23–25 "A Night In Treme" (The Musical Majesty of New Orleans) with Donald
Harrison, Jr. Quintet and The Mardi Gras Indians plus special guest
Cyril Neville
(Mardi Gras Indians all shows expect 11:30pm Friday & Saturday)
Donald Harrison, Jr. – alto saxophone, vocals
Detroit Brooks – guitar
Zaccai Curtis – piano
Max Moran – bass
Joe Dyson – drums
Cyril Neville – percussion, vocals
David Simon and Eric Overmyer's acclaimed HBO series Treme (pronounced Tre–may)
isn't about the New Orleans music scene per se. But as a gritty, affectionate
and ground level post–Katrina character study centered on the Crescent City neighborhood
that gives the show its name, the eclectic and infectious sounds of New Orleans
tie the drama together as Treme shines a welcome national spotlight on a
place where music is inextricably woven into the fabric of every day life. This
week, "A Night In Treme" will bring those unforgettable Treme performance
scenes to life at Jazz Standard, with a great band led by "Big Chief" Donald Harrison
Jr. and guest appearances by Cyril Neville of the Neville Brothers (the First Family
of New Orleans rhythm & blues) and the Mardi Gras Indians. Together, they will create
a vivid musical portrait of a city that has shaped American (and international)
music for more than a century.
Music Charge: $30
6/26 Harold Lopez-Nussa Trio
Harold Lopez-Nussa – piano
Felipe Cabrera – bass
Ruy Adrian Lopez-Nussa – drums
Tonight's show offers the promise of one of the year's most auspicious Jazz Standard
debuts. The 26-year-old Franco-Cuban pianist Harold Lopez-Nussa Torres performed
at the 2006 Montreux Jazz Festival and recorded his Harmonia Mundi album Sobre
El Atelier with the support of Montreux Fest main man Claude Nobs. It includes
classics by Wayne Shorter ("Footprints") and Charlie Parker ("Donna Lee") along
with Harold's scintillating originals like "Mi Son Cerra" and "E'cha." In an April
2011 ceremony in Paris, Harold Lopez-Nussa was presented with the prestigious French
Adami "Talents Jazz 2011" award.
Music Charge: $25
6/27 Mingus Big Band
The Washington Post says: "The best jazz orchestra in the world bears the
name of the Mingus Big Band. A remarkable high standard of musicianship, energy
and consistency!"

6/28–29 Sachal Vasandani
Sachal Vasandani – vocals
John Ellis – tenor saxophone
Gerald Clayton – piano (6/28)
Jeb Patton – piano (6/29)
tba – bass
Marcus Gilmore – drums
Jazz Standard and Mack Avenue herald the 6/21 release of Hi–Fly, the eagerly
awaited new album by one of today's best young jazz singers, Sachal Vasandani. Named
for the classic Randy Weston tune, the new CD features Sachal's working band plus
some very special guests including the legendary Jon Hendricks on two tracks. It's
the successor to Sachal's 2009 release We Move, hailed by Jazz Times
as "one of the best releases of the year." Legendary jazz vocalist Sheila Jordan
says: "Jazz singing is alive and doing great because of this talented young man."
Music Charge: $20
6/30–7/3 Gerald Clayton Trio
Gerald Clayton – piano
Joe Sanders – bass
Justin Brown – drums
A rising star of post–bop piano and an impressive composer, 26–year–old Gerald Clayton
made a thrilling debut with his 2009 album two–shade (Decca/Emarcy). He later
earned two Grammy Award nominations, for his original song "Battle Circle" as Best
Instrumental Composition; and for the Clayton Brothers' New Song and Dance
as Best Jazz Instrumental Album. On May 10, Gerald Clayton will release his second
Decca/Emarcy CD, bond — the paris sessions. It's a perfectly balanced blend
of inventive originals ("Snake Bite," "Sun Glimpse") and classics from the Great
American Songbook ("If I Were A Bell," "All The Things You Are"). Ben Ratliff wrote
in The New York Times "Clayton's playing had huge, authoritative presence,
an Oscar Peterson-like style, highly controlled touch and dynamics and rhapsodic,
episodic soloing."
