The Music of the Modern Jazz Quartet
April 15-16 - The Allen Room
For nearly 50 years they were the greatest of all jazz super-groups, in which the
deep, classically-inspired compositional style of pianist John Lewis was brilliantly
counterbalanced by the blues-drenched approach of vibraphonist Milt Jackson. Yet
the distinctive music of The Modern Jazz Quartet survives even the remarkable men
who created it, as drummer/music director Lewis Nash, NEA Jazz Master pianist
Kenny Barron, vibraphonist Steve Nelson, bassist Peter Washington,
and special guest guitarist Jim Hall show in this program of MJQ classics
like "Django" and "Bag's Groove."
