Eddie Palmieri's Afro Caribbean Jazz Sextet included Eddie Palmieri on Piano, Ruben Rodriguez on Bass, Jose Clausell on Timbales, Vicente "Little Johnny" Rivero on Congas, Ivan Renta on Tenor Saxophone, Richie Viruet on Trumpet, and Steve Turre (Guest) on Trombone. I arrived for this set (after the ballet) during a piano-conga conversation, steady and fierce. Immediately, I felt the definitive dance rhythms, warm and tropical, before they switched to melancholy fusion. Clausell's timbales (that look like small drums) worked together with "Little Johnny" Rivero's congas to build the pulse. This true Latin fervor included numerous duos, and, when Ivan Renta infused the music with his moody, bluesy sax, Rivero's congas turned slow and sultry. Clausell's cymbals helped turn mambo to rhumba, and this meandering melody became momentous.

"In Walked Bud", written by Thelonius Monk and dedicated to Bud Powell, went wild, with soulful and sensational tones and tempos. Eddie Palmieri led Richie Viruet, Ivan Renta, and guest, Steve Turre, on a brassy bravura, while Rubén Rodriguez and the percussion merged to set up a surprise. Just when you thought the set was over, "Little Johnny" Rivero fired up a conga solo and the band finished with a frenzied finale.
