JAZZ STANDARD, one of the nation's premier jazz clubs,
offers another impressive month of music with jazz legends and rising stars throughout
November. From 11/6 – 11/11, the JAZZ COMPOSERS COLLECTIVE celebrates its 20th
anniversary. The collective will reprise its festival featuring 11 bands led by
the Collective's founding members: Ben Allison, Michael Blake, Ron Horton, Frank
Kimbrough and Ted Nash. Two–time Grammy Award winner Maria Schneider returns
for her annual Thanksgiving week run at Jazz Standard at the helm of her all–star
orchestra (11/20 – 11/25). Pianist Geri Allen will appear with her high–energy
group Timeline, featuring the exciting young tap–dancer Maurice Chestnut
(11/28 – 12/1). Our ever–popular "Mingus Mondays" residency continues in November
with the Grammy Award–winning Mingus Big Band appearing every week on 11/5,
11/12, 11/19 and 11/26. Below is a complete schedule of November performances

Steve Kuhn was a 22–year–old Harvard graduate when he joined the John Coltrane Quartet
for a few unforgettable months in 1960. He went on work with Stan Getz, Art Farmer,
Oliver Nelson, Gary McFarland, Sheila Jordan, and Miroslav Vitous, to name a few;
and solidified his credentials as a leader during a period of residency in Sweden
(1967–1971) when he formed a trio that toured throughout Europe. An ECM recording
artist since 1974, his many fine recordings include Mostly Coltrane (2009)
and Wisteria (2012). The Steve Kuhn Trio, wrote Nate Chinen in The New
York Times, is "an effortlessly modern enterprise, with roots stretching through
a tangle of post-bop traditions. For any admirer of jazz piano, or articulate small-group
jazz in general, it's something that shouldn't be missed."

11/5 Mingus Big Band
Our acclaimed "Mingus Monday" series continues tonight with two blazing sets by
the Grammy Award– winning Mingus Big Band. They'll perform the music of legendary
bassist/composer Charles Mingus (1922 – 1979), "some of the most dramatic and powerful
jazz composed in the 20th century." (John Fordham, The Guardian)

11/6 – 11/11 Ben Allison: Jazz Composers Collective Reunion *JS:10 Anniversary

From 1992 to 2005, the Jazz Composers Collective was a potent organizational force
on the NYC music scene dedicated to advancing the development and presentation of
new music, while building new audiences for creative jazz. The Collective's annual
concert series became a mainstay of NYC's creative music scene for twelve seasons;
in total, these shows featured the work of 50 composers, the participation of over
250 musicians, and the premiere of over 300 new works. This week at Jazz Standard,
we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the JCC with performances by no
less than eleven different bands – featuring bassist/composer Ben Allison in collaboration
with such first–rank players as trumpeter Ron Horton, pianist Frank Kimbrough, and
saxophonists Ted Nash and Michael Blake. "We started the Collective as a way to
provide musicians with opportunities to create and perform original compositions,
" says Ben Allison. "I'm thrilled to reunite with Michael, Ron, Frank, and Ted to
revisit some of the music from that period and play new works too."

The in–demand pianist will lead an all–star quartet in two scintillating sets. Frank
Kimbrough's new Palmetto CD, Live at Kitano, is a captivating trio date with
bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Matt Wilson.

In a New York Times review of Ron Horton's Genius Envy (OmniTone),
Ben Ratliff said that it "bears the imprint of patience and maturity as well as
historical literacy. It is studiously attentive to jazz of the last 40 years, specifically,
a line of small–group composers like Paul Bley, Ornette Coleman, Andrew Hill and
Marty Ehrlich, all of whom have written fairly romantic music while experimenting
with rhythm and harmony."

Saxophonist Ted Nash made major waves in 1999 with Rhyme and Reason (Arabesque),
the debut album by his striking Double Quartet. At JazzTimes.com, Bill Bennett
wrote: "This recording demonstrates that the range of what might be called chamber
jazz is just as broad as that of its classical cousin. What began with the John
Kirby Sextet and the Modern Jazz Quartet continues to make its creative way through
our world."

Co–Exist is the title of the CD by Winard Harper & Jeli Posse, released September
2012 through Jazz Legacy Productions. It's a set of graceful, passionate, and swinging
music from one of the world's premier jazz drummers, who leads a hard–charging "little
big band" with special guest performances by the legendary tenor saxophonist and
flautist Frank Wess – a stalwart of the great Count Basie band from 1953–1964. Frank
will be on the stand for this engagement along with another very special guest,
trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis. "No other drummer captures the spirit of Art Blakey
more than Winard Harper!" (The Chicago Sun-Times)

The Guardian's Will Hodgkinson declared: "Growing up in Manaus and Rio but
long ago transplanted to New York, Vinicius Cantuária brings bossa nova the
innovations of the downtown avant-garde." Vinicius himself says that his artistic
goal is "to do beautiful music, to play in small jazz clubs like my personal Fab
Four: Bill Evans, Miles Davis, Tom Jobim and Chet Baker." A special musician works
his special magic, this week at Jazz Standard!

Maria Schneider – composer and conductor
Maria Schneider's Thanksgiving residency at the head of the orchestra she founded
in 1992 is an annual tradition and one of the most–anticipated bookings on our yearly
calendar. The two–time Grammy Award winner "now has become entrenched among the
ranks of America's leading composers, " declared DownBeat, while Bob Karlovits
of the Pittsburgh Tribune–Review asserted: "She puts together stories that
speak with the clarity of Ernest Hemingway and the musical grace of Aaron Copland."
In September 2012, Maria conducted the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and soprano Dawn
Upshaw in a performance of Carlos Drummond de Andrade Stories; the concert
was recorded, and will be released in 2013. The Maria Schneider Orchestra has performed
at festivals and concert halls worldwide, but there's nothing quite as intimate
and thrilling as hearing this all–star aggregation live at Jazz Standard!

music, because he had his own definite ideas about what was good and what was bad,
and he didn't mind telling anybody what he had on his mind. In that way, we were
a lot alike. Our musical ideas were different sometimes. But he was always an inventive,

In 2009, Geri Allen recorded performances at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in
Ohio and Reed College in Oregon to create the first live album of her stellar career.
For these shows, Geri led a truly unique group that combined the kinetic talents
of her piano trio with those of tap dancer Maurice Chestnut, "who brings magical
footwork and musicianship in the vein of the late Gregory Hines and contemporaries
Savion Glover." (Mark F. Turner, AllAboutJazz.com) The resulting CD, simply
titled Live and released in 2010 on the Dig imprint, was hailed by The
New York Times as "the rewardingly bold new statement from Ms. Allen, a wise
