JAZZ STANDARD, one of the nation's premier jazz clubs,
offers another impressive month of music with jazz legends and rising stars throughout
July. This month, Jazz Standard continues its JS:10 Anniversary concert series
with special engagements by three of our longtime favorites: Hammond organ master
Dr. Lonnie Smith celebrates his 70th Birthday, performing with
both his trio (7/3, 7/5) and his "In The Beginning" Octet (7/6–7/8); Don Byron's
New Gospel Quintet (7/12–7/15) with vocalist Carla Cook; and Anat Cohen
hosts a special "Invitation Series" featuring appearances by guitarists Romero
Lubambo (7/26) and Howard Alden (7/27), her Anzic Orchestra (7/28),
and pianist Fred Hersch (7/29). Our ever–popular "Mingus Mondays" residency
continues in July with performances by the Grammy Award–winning Mingus Big Band
(7/2, 7/9, 7/16, 7/23) and the powerhouse Mingus Dynasty (7/30). Below

The gospel–rooted, blues–tinged playing of pianist Cyrus Chestnut has delighted
Jazz Standard audiences for years. We're pleased to welcome him back for this gala
"JS10" appearance, especially in the company of the celebrated saxophonist James
Carter ("always dazzling, always melodic, " wrote John L. Walters in The Guardian).
Cyrus began his musical training at age five and made his first public performance
at age seven at his father's Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Maryland; between 1994
and 2001, he released seven CDs for the Atlantic label. His latest release The
Cyrus Chestnut Quartet (WJ3 Records) was produced by Todd Barkan and is comprised
entirely of Cyrus originals. "One hears in his smart stylings not only the gospel
sounds at the root of his very being, but classic – some say nostalgic – jazz adorned
with utterly uninhibited improvisations, flashes of pop and bop, whimsy and wit."

A long–time favorite of our patrons and staff alike, Hammond B–3 organ master Dr.
Lonnie Smith returns to Jazz Standard to celebrate our tenth anniversary, his seventieth
birthday, and the release of a terrific new CD entitled The Healer through
the artist's own Pilgrimage Productions.

In a review of the good Doctor live at Ronnie Scott's in 2011, John Fordham wrote
in The Guardian: "Dr. Lonnie Smith remains remarkably cliché–free, even after
five decades in the game…Smith painted a landscape of constantly changing weather,
through sudden lightning–strikes of chordal sound disappearing as fast as they
emerged, spacily abstract, upward spiraling runs, drumbeat rattlings and urgent,

Lauren Kinhan has shone brightly on our stage in her performances with the group
New York Voices; now we're pleased to welcome her back again at the helm of her
own group. Avalon (E1 Music) is Laura's latest recording and the successor
to her well–received debut Hardly Blinking. Key tracks include "Dory And
A Single Oar, " with its smoking Donny McCaslin tenor solo; "Here After, " a beautiful
and poignant duet with Jonatha Brooke; and the title track "Avalon, " featuring
a flawless sax solo by Joel Frahm. The end result was Lauren Kinhan's most personal
project to date. Lauren says, "You know, it never gets old, that excitement of sharing
your music with people. It's an opportunity that I really appreciate." Tonight,
Lauren will be previewing brand new material from a forthcoming release.

In the spring of 2009, a memorable four–night debut at Jazz Standard officially
launched The Don Byron New Gospel Quintet. Flash forward three years to the band's
latest CD Love, Peace, and Soul (Savoy Jazz), a celebration of the joyful,
house-rocking side of the African–American gospel tradition. As Richard Gehr wrote
in The Village Voice: "Byron's latest genre experiment will take you to the
river and quite possibly wash you in the water with the help of Carla Cook, who
began her singing career in a Detroit Methodist Church." Carla is one of three recent
additions to the Quintet; the other two are the ex-Sonny Rollins bassist Jerome
Harris, and the great pianist and arranger Nat Adderley Jr., whose career résumé
includes decades of stage and studio work with Aretha Franklin, Herbie Mann, Luther
Vandross, and many more.

The New York Times described Orrin Evans as "a poised artist with an impressive
template of ideas at his command." These qualities have made him one of the most
distinctive pianists of his generation – as well as a respected and in–demand bandleader,
teacher, producer and arranger. For the opening night of his three-night-stand at
Jazz Standard, Orrin and his trio will focus on the tunes that comprise his new
Posi–Tone CD Flip The Script. The album features such compelling Evans originals
as "Question" and "Flip The Script" along with a reinvention of the timeless standard
"Someday My Prince Will Come."

Over the course of six albums, Sean Jones has steadily advanced the art of jazz
through his playing and compositions. The former lead trumpeter of the Lincoln Center
Jazz Orchestra stepped down from that exalted position in 2010 to join Wayne Shorter,
Herbie Hancock and Marcus Miller for a major European tour. He soon released his
sixth career album, No Need For Words (Mack Avenue), and focused more intently
on his own career as a bandleader and recording artist. Anyone who thinks of jazz
as an overly serious and cerebral art form just hasn't seen the man whose soulful
swing and physical charisma have left Jazz Standard audiences shouting for more.

The term "crossover artist" can mean many things. In the case of Argentine pianist
and composer Dario Boente, it's shorthand for a musician as effective in playing
romantic jazz tunes on a grand piano as he is in programming world–beat electronica.
Since moving to New York in 1999, Dario has released seven albums and compilations
as a leader alongside such top–shelf players as Antonio Sánchez, Miguel Zenón, and
Ronny Jordan; and he's performed in more than 20 countries around the world. Tonight,
our ongoing "New Dimensions In Latin Jazz" series presents Dario Boente at the helm
of Proyecto Sur – an acoustic group whose repertoire encompasses jazz standards,
Argentine classics, and Boente's sparkling original compositions. "Dario's performances

choro, Argentine tango, and an expansive timeline of Afro–Cuban styles, tenor
saxophonist and clarinetist Anat Cohen has established herself as a leading voice
of her musical generation since arriving in New York City in 1999. This week, Jazz
Standard proudly presents this gifted artist in a series of unique collaborations.

When Anat meets guitarist Howard Alden, the combination promises traditional and
swing jazz at its finest. George Kanzler of the Newark Star Ledger proclaims

Benny Carter, and Dizzy Gillespie.

7/28 Anzic Orchestra
Anat reconvenes her superb Anzic Orchestra, with which she recorded her acclaimed
2007 album Noir. (2007). "While the writing is exemplary, Cohen's playing

7/30 Mingus Dynasty
This is the original Charles Mingus legacy band, formed shortly after its namesake's
death in 1979 and named for the 1959 album Mingus Dynasty. (This recording
was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.) Dynasty's illustrious alumni
role includes Randy Brecker, Jon Faddis, Joe Farrell, Jaki Byard, Kenny Washington,
and Charlie Haden, just to name a few.

Michael Carvin – drums
Master drummer Michael Carvin has been a valued participant in the New York creative
music scene since 1973, when he joined Freddie Hubbard's band. Over the succeeding
four decades, Michael worked with leaders ranging from Dexter Gordon and Ruth Brown
to Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane. He's appeared on over 250 albums and is among
the nation's most respected drum teachers. Any band with Michael Carvin in the drum
seat is guaranteed to swing – and this one, with fellow Texan/saxophonist Keith
Loftis aboard, will be no exception! "Michael Carvin is no ordinary drummer, " declared
Jon Hendricks, "he is a human rhythm machine." Branford Marsalis calls Michael Carvin
"a true jazz stalwart who has taught many of the major jazz drummers who have emerged
in the past fifteen years."
