Among the many qualities of CAM Jazz, since the first day of its foundation, is
its willingness to develop with its artists common pathways that are not only mere
productions but shared roads on which to travel together. The Big Blue quartet is
a perfect example. Although young, some of these Finnish musicians are old friends
of the Roman label which gave them the opportunity to become known outside their
national borders thanks to its CAM Jazz Presents series -- boldly and successfully
created to focus on international young talent throughout the jazz scene. Jorma
Kalevi Louhivuori on trumpet, Antti Kujanpää on piano, Jori Huhtala on bass and
Joonas Leppanen on drums, all gathered here under the name Big Blue to become the
architects of something big, geared towards its search for sound and moving on minimalist
land that, only as background, borrows idioms from Northern European jazz without
focusing on unnecessary genre mannerisms. Indeed, because the four musicians, in
addition to being undisputedly talented, have large appetites for music. Young artists
with ears and eyes wide open to the world around them, capable of mixing languages
and giving birth to a musical conversation branded Big Blue.
