The fact that Giovanni Tommaso is one of the most important players in the history
of Italian jazz needs no further questioning. This is true today, as it was in the
past, confirming Tommaso as a fascinating, sensitive and amazing artist; but the
new "Bassoprofilo" goes right to the heart as the Tuscan bassist pens one of his
most intriguing works. Together with two unique talents such as clarinet player
Gabriele Mirabassi and accordion player Simone Zanchini, Tommaso moves within the
territories of improvisation, melody and lyricism, in a journey that brings out
his full talent as composer.
"The name of the new project I have recently formed", says Tommaso, "is not only
an allusion to the fact that I play the double bass, and that my friend Gabriele's
last name is Mirabassi. It is also a musical "attitude" which starts from the BASS,
without any ties or stylistic constraints. It's no coincidence we jump from a tune
with a contemporary structure to a mazurka, though re-interpreted in a personal
manner. With this Trio we offer a repertoire I wrote in total freedom and without
inhibitions, which was also inspired by memories of my adolescence. Fortunately,
I found Gabriele and Simone who immediately fit in. Their talent and their creativity
made everything very spontaneous, and it wouldn't have been the same without them.
"
It is truly extraordinary to hear the creative play among the three artists, who
are always surprising us as they explore among the styles, genres and ideas with
a simplicity that grasps and amazes the listener track by track. A range of colors
and moods that give life to this new work released by CAM Jazz, and that makes this
album one of the most beautiful in recent years.
