NEW YORK, NY, May 21, 2011 /Jazz NewsWire/ – Looking for
Summer Music Camps? Jazz Camps? The third annual Samba Meets Jazz Workshops (http://www.SambaMeetsJazz.com)
is a summer music camp that will come to life July 24 through 30, and July 31 through
August 6 at College of the Atlantic in picturesque Bar Harbor, Maine, near Acadia
National Park, led by Artistic Directors Roni Ben-Hur ( http://www.RoniBenHur.com),
a world-class guitarist / educator, and virtuoso Brazilian bassist Nilson Matta
(http://www.nilsonmatta.com), along with a faculty of internationally renowned jazz
artists.
Designed for music makers of all ages, on all levels, the summer music camp,
Samba Meets Jazz (http://www.SambaMeetsJazz.com) attendees get to experience personalized
instruction from internationally-renowned artists on a daily basis. Small group
sizes facilitate attentive coaching and guidance during classes, rehearsals and
evening jam sessions. In addition to intimate master classes and clinics, the diverse
group of participants, from across the United States and beyond, experience the
added benefit of networking and making connections. The student body includes adult
hobbyists, college students, instrumentalists / vocalists seeking to explore new
genres, as well as educators and jazz artists seeking to hone their craft. High
school students are encouraged to attend as well, if chaperoned. Significant others
are welcome to attend.
In addition to Roni Ben Hur and Nilson Matta, this year's Samba Meets Jazz summer
music camp educators include pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill; multi-instrument
reed player Steve Wilson (saxophone, flute, clarinet); vocalist and co-founder of
the New School's Vocal Jazz program, Amy London; percussionist Gilad, recognized
by Jazziz as "one of the world's great percussionists" and drummer Zack O'Farrill,
recently lauded by All About Jazz as "one of the youngest Latin jazz lions to roar
onto the scene in quite some time"
"Being involved with music in this spectacular setting provides people with an
opportunity to regenerate their batteries... and reconnect with their creativity
in a nurturing and supportive environment" comments Ben-Hur.
The curriculum for Samba Meets Jazz summer music camp is comprised of a healthy
balance of activities designed to help students develop jazz improvisation skills,
expand their repertoire by working with Standards, Hard Bop, Latin Jazz and in Brazilian
Ensembles, and integrating vocalists and instrumentalists into performing groups
to bolster the development of accompaniment skills. There are also Big Band Sessions,
instruction in arranging, percussion for vocalists and more at this summer music
camp.
The setting for Samba Meets Jazz in Bar Harbor, Maine - which was recently named
by Trip Advisor as one of the top 25 vacation spots in the United States - is designed
for optimum "leisure-learning" just steps away from Acadia National Park.
Samba Meets Jazz (http://www.SambaMeetsJazz.com) is a summer music camp that evolved
from Guitar Intensives, which Executive Director Alice Schiller founded in 2002
to focus solely on jazz guitar. "Our personalized approach, along with our small
size, is what sets Samba Meets Jazz Workshops apart from most other programs" explained
Schiller.
