Young clarinet-player from Naples with a solid background of
classical studies (but already teacher), Luciano shows in this first recording
session as soloist all the strength typical of that kind of man who has been
dedicating all his life to the music.
The cd, dispite of its duration (less than
thirty minutes), shows the differnt "interests", or better, "passions" of this
musician. For example, Poulenc is present in the last
Encore! in which the
leader performs, not without any courage, the complex material of '900s. About
the standards there is a warm interpretetion of
Autumn Leaves, very soft and
passionable at the beginning till the explosion on the solo.
The original
compositions written by the clarinet-player, then, are savoury, like the latin
sounds of
Tiempo a Viento
or
Thank you Hindemith
that easly glances to dixieland
thanks to a fabulous Pietro Condorelli.

- JazzIt - maj/april
Twenty-eight-year old MU member Luca Luciano has
recorded a 25 minute sampler disc of his spirited clarinet and flute talents,
largely in the jazz and Latin idioms. This selection of nifty numbers is mostly
his compositions, along with Autumn
Leaves and an excerpt from Poulenc’s Clarinet Sonata. The
latter, wile well played, is quite diverse form the rest of the programme, and
doesn’t really fit into the collection. Mr. Luciano’s command of the clarinet,
in particular, is clearly evident providing the listener with a frolicsome
approach to his solo which, while engaging enough, wants for a bit more depth
and appropriate stylistic ”vocabulary” in his improvisation. It is as if the
musicians are playing at the pieces in a recreational fashion, rather than
embracing them from within enabling them to build and create a more substantial
sum of the parts. That said, this effort by the young Italian might effectively
assist him in developing his profile in the UK and abroad. His promising
attributes evident here will undoubtedly be developed to realize richer results
in the future recording outgoings Frank Griffith -
