Riccardo
Del Fra was born in Rome in 1956. He has
played with the RAI TV orchestra (italian radio-television) for jazz concerts
and movies soundtracks (F.Fellini's La Città delle Donne, L.Cavani's
La Pelle, etc).
In 1979 he starts playing with
Chet Baker
(9 years partnership 12 records and several films). In the
80's, he moves to Paris. He has played also with:
Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Sonny Stitt, James Moody,
Lee Konitz, Tommy Flanagan, Kenny Wheeler, Paul
Motian, Dave
Liebman, etc. Steady bands with Barney Wilen, Bob Brookmeyer,
Johnny Griffin; played also with
Martial Solal,
René Urtreger, Michel Legrand, Georges Arvanitas.
In 1989, he records
A Sip of Your Touch, a duets CD with Art Farmer,
Dave Liebman,
Rachel Gould,
Enrico
Pieranunzi et Michel Graillier (Grand Prix Fnac), hommage to
Chet Baker
(reissued in 2007- Nocturne). Contemporary music
with the ensemble 2e2m of Paul Mefano (Toru Takemitsu) and traditional
music from Brittany with the singer Annie Ebrel (CD
Velluto di Luna, Voulouz Loar - Diapason
d'or 1999 – Choc Monde de la Musique).
He
is the composer of the music for the films of Lucas Belvaux: Pour rire,
the trilogy Un couple épatant-Cavale-Après la vie, La Raison du plus faible
– The Law of the Weakest (competition Cannes 2006).
In 2000, he records in duo with
Michel Graillier Soft Talk
(prix Charles Cros et prix de l'Académie du jazz). In 2004,
he becomes the head of the Jazz Department of the Conservatoire National Supérieur
de Musique et de Danse de Paris (CNSMDP) where, in 1998,
he had succeeded to Jean-François Jenny Clark as a teacher. In
2005, the CD Roses
and Roots (Nocturne).
In November 2006, he receives the
Django d'or award (confirmed musician).
In 2007, as director of the Jazz Department
of the CNSMDP, with about thirty young students, he attended the 34th IAJE
(International Association for Jazz Education) convention in New York,
where France was the country guest of the year, and where they played concerts for
the Gotha of the international jazz world.
In January 2008, Riccardo Del Fra
receives the Prix du Musicien Européen de l'Académie du Jazz.
Concerts with his own quartet at the IAJE 35th convention in Toronto.
He composes - and plays live - for three french films from the ‘20s for
the Festival Corps et Décors at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. In March, the Cinémathèque
de la Danse gives him a Carte Blanche for a unique special concert at la Cinémathèque
Française where literature, movies, danse and jazz happily meet.
In April, he conducts and plays his music for big band at the Auditorium
of Rome with
Maurizio
Giammarco and the Orchestra del Parco della Musica. Spring and
Summer, tours with CHET MOOD, tribute to
Chet Baker
in quartet with
Enrico Rava, Philip Catherine and Aldo Romano.
October: concerts in Louisiana, in New Orleans, with his own french quintet.
