Born
into a musical family on April 1966 in San Giovanni
Rotondo (FG) south Italy, Leonardo Pianoforte started playing music at an early
age. His father was a accordion and keyboards player who started Leonardo's musical
education by teaching him to play the keyboard at the age of six. Leonardo's father,
continued his musical education by enrolling him in the piano studio and few years
later clarinet with a local teacher.
In
September 1988 got degrees from a classical
Conservatory in Potenza studying with maestro Giuseppe Paolini. Shortly after,
Leonardo heard a recording by
Michael Brecker.
After hearing Brecker on this recording, Leonardo switched to the tenor saxophone.
Since then he has studied classical clarinet, and from then on started to study
jazz by himself.After living in Italy until 1995,
Leonardo moved to London in September 1996 and
lived there for about 7 years.
He has performed and/or recorded with a jazz-soul singer Jenny Lockwood,
pianist Stuart Brown and his trio.
In September 1997 played tenor sax and clarinet
with a female band, called "The Eulipians" from New Castle and made all the
instruments arrangement for their first record. Along his permanence in London,
he has played as well in Jazz Café in Camden Town, Ronnie Scotts, and Pizza Express
and in many Italian restaurant.
Now he led his own band and performs in clubs, concert halls and festivals around
Italy.
Leonardo has also composed music for his jazz quartet. His most recent recording
is a song dedicated to
Michael Brecker
called 13/01/2007 written the day after he died.
He currently lives in south Italy and so far he has studied and participated
to jazz master class with musicians like: Attilio Zanchi, Ettore Fioravanti,
Paolo Fresu,
Bob Mintzer e
Giovanni
Mazzarino. In May 2008 was finalist
for the XII Edizione Premio Internazionale
Massimo Urbani-Camerino-(MC).
Through the years as a jazz saxophone player he has played with pianist Stuart
Brown and his trio: Frank Rotter e Mark Dartford, Jenny Lokwood
and her band, The Eulipians, Martin Ellis, Jonathan Bast,
Gege Telesforo,
Michele Di Martino, Emiliano De Luca, Franco Gregorio, Pasquale
Mega, Camillo Pace,
Marcello Nisi,
Paolo Viola, the Jazz Colour Quartet, Avant garde trio (USA),
Duke saxophone Quartet, Filarmonica di fiati del Vulture and many other.
