 Born
in Rome in 1957, Mro Massimo de Majo began studying music at a young age, and in
1980 - while also studying Music and Literature
at Rome University La Sapienza - earned a Masters in Percussion Instruments at the
"International School of Time" with legendary Master Drummer Marvin B. Smith. He
left Italy shortly after, and during his long career he has refined his studies
under the mentorship of such masters as Elvin Jones, Max Roach,
David Liebman,
Horace Parlan, Billy Hart,
Wayne Shorter and Richie Beirach, performing and recording with
some of the most influential jazz artists in Europe, U.S.A., Scandinavia and Japan.
Interested in the relation of Music with other art forms, Mro de Majo has composed
and performed for contemporary dance and theater companies, and with Italian performanceartist
Bianca Maria Stanzani Ghedini he is the co-founder of a project-oriented company
devoted to creating unusual interactions between poetry, music and other art forms.
Strongly believing in the responsibility of educating new generations of artists,
for the last thirty years Mro de Majo has been known as a passionate teacher, focused
on finding a balance between tradition and innovation, constantly aiming to inspire
each single student in finding her/his unique artistic expression. First invited
in 2009 at the University of Malta to teach
Jazz Music and Percussion - de Majo is now responsible for eight study-units on
specialized techniques and music practices, spanning from Composition, to Applied
Instrumental Training, Jazz, Performance Skills, Transcription Techniques, and more.
Cotutoring the course "Performance Collaboration" at the Dance Studies Dep. and
preparing new projects within the Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences, he is
also conducting new ground-breaking collaborative programs with other departments
of the University.
In 1988, in Tokyo, Massimo de Majo was awarded
by the prestigious concert organization Min-On with the "Min-On Art Award" for his
"...great contribution to promotion and development of a new musical movement for
the people with the aim of creating peace and culture".
Mro. de Majo is listed in the "Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD, LP and Cassette"
(Penguin 1995) and he is a member of KODA (the
Danish copyrights management society) since 1985.
