Mike Melillo

 Mike Melillo è nato a Newark
nel 1939.
Formatosi in una scuola di cosiddetta "Light music" insieme con
Woddy Shaw e Larry Young, dove riconobbero subito il suo innato talento per il jazz
("Ho cominciato suonando le canzoni che erano nell’aria senza sapere che il mio modo di suonare era
jazz"), si diplomò poi alla
Rutgers University nel 1962.
 Intanto, quale pianista fisso del Top Room Jazz Club, ebbe modo di misurarsi con
Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Art Farmer, Zoot Sims,
Clark Terry, Chet Baker…
Nel '65 entra nel quartetto di
Sonny Rollins e vi suona per due anni in uno dei periodi di massima creatività del
"saxphone colossus" purtroppo non documentato discograficamente per una diatriba con la casa discografica, la RCA.
Negli anni '70 diventa pianista e direttore musicale del quartetto/quintetto di
Phil Woods con il quale incide nove dischi di cui ben due vincono il Grammy
Award.
Nel 1985 Melillo compone un concerto per orchestra sinfonica e jazz ensemble che vede
Chet Baker solista principale ed è documentato nel disco Soul Note
"Mike Melillo/Chet Baker Simphonically".
Mike Melillo insegna attualmente al New York Stage College, al Tombrock College
ed alla Lehigh University esibendosi inoltre come performer in piano solo e trio in Europa, America e Giappone.

For over forty
years jazz musicians have considered The Deer Head Inn a
musical home.
It all began when Fay and Bob
Lehr bought an old wooden hotel situated on the Delaware River
ninety miles west of Manhattan and pianist John Coates
started weekly solo nights. Subsequently, with
many musicians residing in the area, a musical family developed with the
result that the club now hosts a stream of fine jazz musicians year round
playing in a myriad of styles. Unfortunately, non commercial free creative
endeavors, being considered a marginal activity, are in a constant
struggle for survival.
However, since The
Deer Head Inn remains one of the few venues of it's kind left,
it's continuance is crucial to the cultural life of the community.
