Jazzitalia - Artisti: Trevor Watts

Nato a York, in Inghilterra, Trevor Watts è un compositore, arrangiatore, sassofonista (alto e soprano), pianista e percussionista. La famiglia di Trevor Watts si trasferì ad Halifax nello Yorkshire quando aveva solo 6 mesi di vita e lì è cresciuto.

Trevor è un musicista completamente autodidatta, e le sue ispirazioni provengono all'amore per il jazz di suo padre, e dalla grande collezione di 78 giri che suo padre portò dopo aver vissuto in Canada e durante le molte visite negli States durante gli anni '20.

Trevor dovette svolgere il servizio miltare nella RAF, e così entrò nella RAF band nel 1959. Lì incontrò, tra gli altri, John Stevens e Paul Rutherford e costituì l'associazione musicale che poi diventò lo Spontaneous Music Ensemble e l'Amalgam nei primi anni '60. Questi gruppo cambiarono radicalmente l'aspetto dello stile del Jazz europeo e della musica improvvisata, e spianarono la strada anche per altri musicisti. Per un breve periodo, prima della costituzione dello SME nel 1965, Trevor ebbe alcune esperienze suonando al Marquee Club di Londra con gente come Sonny Boy Williamson, Long John Baldry e Rod Stewart. Lo SME sebbene iniziò come un gruppo, gradualmente prevalse lo stile di John Stevens, che ne prese la direzione, così Trevor attraverso il suo gruppo Amalgam cercò il suo stile musicale più personale.

Amalgam incluse molti differenti elementi della musica. Questi elementi furono principalmente introdotti dai differenti tipi di musicisti che presero parte al gruppo. Trevor credendo sempre che non era importante quale "stile" una persona suonasse, ma che il desiderio di suonare insieme fosse la cosa principale, riuscì a trovare un senso. Ciò ha causato che fossero attribuite etichette errate alla loro musica come "Jazz Rock" negli anni '70, ma poichè Watts non riconosce mai clichè verbali per descrivere la musica, certamente il termine "Jazz Rock" non può essere considerato un tentativo per etichettare la loro musica. Allo stesso modo, la Moirè Music Drum Orchestra non era un tentativo di rappresentare l'"Afro Jazz". Questi progetti erano n modo di creare una situazione dove i musicisti di differente estrazione potessero suonare insieme senza cambiare radicalmente il modo in cui ognuno suonava individualmente. Alcuni dei musicisti che hanno fatto parte dell'Amalagam sono stati Barry Guy, Harry Miller, John Stevens, Stan Tracey, Paul Rutherford e altri. Ma il periodo più significativo per quel gruppo è stato tra il 1974 e il 1979. In quel periodo vi suonavano Keith Rowe (guitar), Colin McKenzie (Bass Gtr), Liam Genockey (Drums) e Trevor Watts (alto & sop saxes). Questo quartetto ha lavorato a lungo e duramente per la musica.

Trevor ha anche avuto per molti anni un duo molto importante con il batterista Liam Genockey, ma sfortunatamente non hanno mai registrato nulla.

Watts è stato un membro del Louis Moholo Group che ha girato con l'americano Frank Wright (sax tenore), dell'Open Circle di Stan Tracey (con John Stevens & Danny Thompson), e dello Stan's Tentacles group. Gli Splinters con Stan, John, Kenny Wheeler, Tubby Hayes, Phil Seaman, Jeff Clyne. La London Jazz Composers Orchestra sin dal suo inizio nel 1972. Bobby Bradford Quartet (Bobby era il trombettista originale con Ornette Coleman). Inoltre Watts ha suonato, tra gli altri, con Steve Lacy, Archie Shepp, Don Cherry, Denardo Coleman, il poeta Jayne Cortez e il violinista Peter Knight degli Steeleye Span.

Quando Trevor si è trasferito ad Hastings nel 1980 cominciò ad interessarsi maggiormente alla composizione. Ha così formato il Moirè Music Group con 10 elementi per suonare queste sue composizioni. Le prime esibizioni ci sono state nel 1982 al Roundhouse di Londra, e al Bracknell Jazz Festival, e in quel periodo la loro musica causò un bel clamore. Tra i membri originari c'erano Lol Coxhill, Veryan Weston, Nana Tsiboe, Mamadi Kamara, Liam Genockey e Larry Stabbins. Larry proseguì formando il gruppo Working Week. Nello stesso periodo, per mantenere attivo il suo lato improvvisativo, Trevor costituì la Trevor Watts Drum Orchestra (1982), che includeva Nana Tsiboe e Mamadi Kamara alle percussioni africane, Liam Genockey, Ernest Mothle dal Sud Africa al basso, Peter Knight (Violin) e Watts. Era sempre stato un desiderio di Trevor includere elmenti di ritmica africana all'interno della forma musicale improvvisata, e fu questo il primo gruppo che riuscì ad ottenere ciò.

La Moirè Music diventò di 14 elementi nel 1984 e includeva i cantanti Phil Minton, Maggie Nichols e il sudafricano Pinise Saul. Questo gruppo durò fino al 1988 quando Trevor modificò un po' l'orientamento e formò la Moirè Music che includeva la cantante Lianne Carroll, il tenorista Simon Pickard, Veryan Weston e altri.

Nel 1990 Trevor abbandonò la Moirè Music come entità di esecuzione delle sue composizioni e fuse i nomi dei due gruppi ottenendo la Moirè Music Drum Orchestra. In quella formazione c'erano 4 batteristi africani, basso, tamburi e i suoi sassofoni. Inizialmente nel 1990 il gruppo ha avuto un tour in Canada, USA, Venezuela e Mexico di sei settimane, ed è stato in quel tour che la loro musica si è meglio modellata. La Moirè Drum Orchestra durò fino al 1998 e in quel periodo aveva girato nel mondo incluso Colombia, Venezuela, Isole Caraibiche, Burma (due volte), India, Singapore Arts Festival, Malaysia, USA, Canada, Isole delle Azorre, SudAfrica, Botswana e Lesotho. Fu durante l'originario tour nel 1990 che Watts e il gruppo incontrarono e vi suonarono con i membri del Teatro Negro de Barlovento, gruppo nero del Venezuela. Wats ebbe lidea di fondere i due gruppi e vedere cosa potesse accadere. Così il British Council inviò Watts in Venezuela nel 1991 per studiare la musica di Barlovento e creare gli arrangiamenti per alcuni concerti in Europa. Ciò accadeva nel 1992 e il gruppo diventò così composto da 35 elementi con cantanti, ballerini, attori e strumentisti. Si sono esibiti al Saalfelden Festival in Austria e al Crawley Festival in Inghilterra oltre a due serate di grande successo al London's Jazz Cafe. Watts e la Drum Orchestra tornarono in Venzuela nel 1995 per un reciproco tour, suonando a Caracas come in altre città. Il gruppo fu chiamato "Una Sola Voz" in base al titolo del brano "With One Voice" contenuto nella registrazione della Moirè Music per la ARC label.

Successivamente la Drum Orchestra non vi ha più fatto parte, ma la Moirè Music si è esibita in varie formazioni dal Trio, al Quartetto e al Quintetto. Ha anche visitato molti paesi come Sudan, Cameroon, Nuova Zelanda, Australia, USA, Canada, Giamaica (dove hanno sunoato anche per il Prime Minister), Trinidad, Repubblica Dominicana, Ecuador e Bolivia.

Alcuni dei principali festivals in cui si sono esibiti sono Womad (UK), Glastonbury, Berlin Jazz Festival, Chicago World Music Festival, Khartoum Festival, Penang Festival, Sarawak Festival, Wangaratta Jazz Festival (Australia), Vancouver Jazz Festival (due volte), Ottawa Jazz Festival, San Francisco Jazz Festival, Washington DC Jazz Festival (due volte), Cervantino Festival, Mexico e Monterey Jazz Festival in California.

Attualmente (2002), così come con la Moirè Music, Watts ha costituito un nuovo gruppo che è più vicino all'idea compositiva dell'originario progetto della Moirè Music stessa. Questo gruppo è chiamato Trevor Watts and the Celebration Band ed è composto da 8 elementi (4 sax, chitarra, basso, percussioni, batteria), e sta nuovamente causando clamore. La band ha registrato un nuovo CD per l'etichetta di Watts, la ARC label, che si chiama "Trevor Watts and the Celebration Band" (ARC 010) e che si sta esibendo in molti concerti e festival.

Watts suona anche in un nuovo duo di improvvisazione con il suo compagno di lunga tempo, il pianista Veryan Weston. Hanno registrato un nuovo CD con Weston per la Emanem label dal titolo "6 Dialogues".

Trevor fa parte di un nuovo gruppo che si è formato in Messico dove ha appena registrato un doppio album. Questo progetto è organizzato da musicista messicano Gibran Cervantes che ha auto costruito il suo strumento composto da molti Berimbau collegati insieme (una magnifica struttura e un suono interessante). Nel gruppo c'è anche Cyro Baptista, percussionista brasiliano che ha suonato con John Zorn e Wynton Marsalis, Tino, un percussionista cubano e Francisco Bringas, messicano, che suona, tra le altre cose, le tablas.

Watts ha avuto molti incarichi negli anni, e alcuni di questi sono:
1970: Spazio cultura della Thames TV con John Stevens per insegnare improvvisazione alla John Cass school nell'East End di London
1984: I 14 elementi della Moirè Music Group come commissione del Bracknell Festival
1985: Contemporary Music Network Tour dei 10 elementi della Moirè Music Group.
1992: Incarico dall'Arts Council per nuove composizioni per unire la Moiré Music Drum Orchestra e il Teatro Negro de Barlovento (Venezuela) (35-elementi).

Altri incarici dall'Arts Council per composizioni e registrazioni e molti tour per conto del British Council dal 1988 fino ad oggi.

Trevor and Veryan spent 10 years together working in Trevor's project - Moiré Music. Most recently they have played duets in UK and Italy and have made two recordings for EMANEM records.
